Improving building performance has increasingly been a focus of federal and local policy. In 2022 the Biden Administration released the first-everfederal building performance standardaiming at increased electrification and net-zero emissions in all federal buildings by 2045, and 2023 saw the White House announcing plans to adoptbuilding energy standardsfor new houses financed by the federal government. Whilesome stateshave likewise advanced aggressive building codes to reduce energy intensity,othershave passed legislation to make building codes more lenient concerning efficiency. Geothermal energy also gained traction in 2023, with the U.S. Department of Energy fundingcommunity-scale demonstration projects.
