This article considers how planners should handle community benefits claims by detailing the development and implementation of four community benefits agreements (CBAs). It identifies four factors that influence a CBA’s success, including the extent to which local government is involved in negotiating and implementing the deal. It urges planners to carefully consider how well a CBA aligns with the interests and goals of the local government before deciding to support or oppose it.
